The Ford Conservatives are working quickly to introduce legislation that will severely restrict a municipalities ability to install bike lanes in cities and towns across Ontario.
If the bill passes, the Conservatives will require Ministerial approval for a municipality to install a bike lane that limits an existing traffic lane. The Conservatives will also be asking for data on bike lane projects that have been installed in the past 5 years. Although no decision has yet been made on whether to remove any of these bike lanes, Premier Doug Ford and transit minister Prabmeet Sarkaria have specifically targeted Bloor St bike lanes in their comments to the press.
Our office is working with a provincial coalition of cycling and road safety advocates to organize a rally at Queens Park for October 23 at 5 pm.
Easing traffic congestion is about giving people more transportation options, not fewer. We also know that complete streets save lives and prevent devastating crashes. Nevertheless, the Ford Conservatives wants to stop municipalities from building safe streets, and even tear out existing safe streets, all to save drivers a few seconds on their commutes.
Sign up for the rally on Wednesday, October 23 here.
We’re organizing fliering blitzes to reach busy intersections, bike racks, and community hubs across the city and need volunteers! Click on the link to access the volunteer sign up sheet: https://forms.gle/3zek7zAUR22RA6Qn7.
