The Ford Conservatives have introduced Bill 212, the Reducing Gridlock Saving You Time Act, 2024. The bill includes measures to restrict where bike lanes can be built as a way to solve congestion, despite years of evidence that bike lanes do not cause it.
The bill allows the Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria to request data from municipalities to “review” existing cycling infrastructure to decide which bike lanes can stay and to get permission to install a new bike lane.
The Premier has said publicly that the decision to remove Bloor, University and Yonge bike lanes has already been made.
Easing congestion is about giving people more transportation options, not fewer. We also know that complete streets save lives and prevent devastating crashes. Nevertheless, the Ford Conservatives wants to stop municipalities from building safe streets, and even tear out existing safe streets, all to save drivers a few seconds on their commutes.
