PPE Urgently Needed at Long Term Care Homes

Published on April 15, 2020

Today, I sent this letter to Hon. Christine Elliott, Minister of Health, regarding the COVID-19 outbreak at Mon Sheong Home for the Aged (D’Arcy Home). As of today, 49 residents and 13 staff have tested positive, and 10 residents have died. This is a tragedy.

Mon Sheong put in a request for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Ministry of Health before the outbreak, however they only received the PPE after they issued a press release to inform the public about the COVID-19 outbreak at the D’Arcy Home. PPE stocks are running low again, and Mon Sheong Home for the Aged has made additional requests for PPE to the Ministry of Health but they have not yet arrived.

Staff, residents, and family members of loved ones at a number of long term care homes in University-Rosedale have reached out to my office in the past few days to ask for my assistance in securing the PPE and additional staff they need to ensure the community can stay safe or recover. The Ontario Government needs to act now to protect these vulnerable members of our community. I join my colleagues in demanding a number of crucial supports for long term care residents and staff.
