Background:
The Ford government has been forcing municipalities in the Greater Golden Horseshoe to redraw their urban borders and permit development on approximately 16,000 hectares of nearby Greenbelt and farmland.
Ontario needs to build 1.5 million homes to meet the needs of current and future Ontarians, but not like this. These orders will devour natural spaces and farmland, increase infrastructure costs, vehicle traffic, and pollution, and undermine the building of vibrant transit-supportive communities. The question isn’t whether we build, but how, where, and who we build for. Affordability and sustainability are integral to any good housing plan
That's why the NDP is calling on the Ford government to commit to a housing plan that increases density in areas already zoned for development, by ending exclusionary zoning and building more townhomes, duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes in neighbourhoods close to where people work, play and study.
