I was shocked to recently learn that a U.S. company received a $140m public contract earlier in 2025, to build part of the Peter Giligan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, taking both profits and jobs offshore and out of Ontario.
To stabilize our economy, the Ontario government needs to show leadership by leveraging its purchasing clout to build and upgrade critical public infrastructure, like hospitals, using Ontario workers and Ontario businesses.
This week, I joined MPP Catherine Fife (Waterloo) in writing to Ontario’s Infrastructure Minister to request that the government brings in a stronger Buy Canada, Build Canada plan, opens an investigation into the original $140m contract for violations of Ontario’s Procurement Restriction Policy, and bans U.S. companies from being awarded public contracts during this trade war.
Now is not the time for half measures - we need a buy it here, build it here approach.
